added 2 original very bad images in a restored way
Our thanks go out to Photographyblog.com who took 39 full-size sample photos with the Sony HX9V and share the results
here with us.
Keep in mind they are all pre-production samples and for some reason all the images from Warwickshire, England shot with the Sony HX100V, HX9V and WX10 produced the worst images I have seen so far. (see
here)
So we have bad quality, soft and blotchy images, let´s see what we can do about that.
In cases like that resizing and post processing might save the image.
As usual all post processing is done in Faststone Image Viewer.
Resized 50% each side, Auto Adjust Colors and USM Sharpen 18 / 1.0

2 pictures were so bad that I had to resize to 2MP or 1 MP to let them look acceptable.

this one was so out of focus and grainy 2MP still looked bad resized to 1MP and did some Faststone magic click image |
omg that looks fugly. i'm totally disappointed. i hope that was just some broken camera. e. g. the grass isn't grass, it's a blurry something. everything's blurry and washed out.
ReplyDeletesome of the pictures were so bad, they were beyond recovering, like the second last (guy holding HX100V).
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind they are all pre-production samples.
I don't know if I should buy the HX7V or wait for the HX9V. The HX7V comes out a few days before my birthday and my girlfriend was going to buy it for me. I'm mainly after a travel camera to take to Europe for 3 months... But I have a few major events coming up early April I'd like to have a camera for. I'm a pretty novice user and will probably not use manual mode at all... So not sure if I should wait for the hx9v....or if the 7 will suffice me... Any advice?
ReplyDeleteDion, if all the info I collected and all the comparison HX9V vs HX7V did not help you, I have done a louse job and I am sorry I did not make myself clearer.
ReplyDeleteWait the few days, the HX9V IS the much better camera in so many ways.
When in doubt, read: "Sony HX9V, HX7V, WX10 and HX5 compared" again.
Hi Joe,
ReplyDeletei just asked you regarding USM sharpening in another thread - dont know where anymore - sorry.
In another post from you i have read, that you have tried to take the pictures with less MP instead to reduce size later on. And the result was, that a PC is doing a better job.
In a german forum one has tried following with a Tx100v which is the very same sensor:
He took a scene with 16 MP, 10 MP and 5 MP. Each scene is reduced in size with lightroom to 5 MP (also the 5 MP picture is calced to 5 MP to be consistent). He has done this in a brighter as well as in lower light scene.
What he found out is that there is no big difference in the bright scene. But there is a huge difference in the low light scene - and when its getting darker he assumes that the difference is more visible.
Here is the link of the forum. Feel free to translate it to english. You can review the pictures in the third last post (low light scene) - user Harald:

BD, I did dl the pictures and I can not make out that huge difference he speaks of at all.
ReplyDeleteDid you dl the brighter or darker scene. I can see also a huge difference between both when you zoom in.
ReplyDeleteBD , the darker scene and the looked to me pretty similar at 100%
ReplyDeleteHi Joe,
ReplyDeletethere are a lot more details in the last picture as ou can clearly see at the bushes at the bottom of the pics. I think this is one thing we have to work out when Hx9v is available.
