Sony HX7V / HX9V analyzing the 16MP sensor pictures - Part 6


In this post we analyze the results from a production Sony HX9V.
The samples are from DC Watch, Japan
updated also with a video result



I did choose this part of the picture because there are some low light areas where you can get an good idea about the noise handling.
Also I do not care much about well lit ISO tests. Nearly no one uses high ISO in bright conditions.
A real ISO test has to be in low light conditions.

the captured color nuances are quite good

the dynamic range is quite astonishing - if you wiggle your display, you can see the detail in the bright and dark areas

The little 16MP sensor struggles to get the detail in the low light areas

In case you were wondering about the 3 video samples because the meaning was lost in translation. 56.6MB / 1,920 × 1,080 / 60p active mode,  55.9MB / 1,920 × 1,080 / 60i active mode,  49MB / 1,920 × 1,080 / 60i standard stabilisation.

What most people do not recognize, is the big impact the 50/60p mode has.
If you ever tried to capture a frame of the original interlaced stream you know this result:

If I had not already ordered a Sony HX9V, after these results I sure would have. The 16 x lens is of good quality and the usual faults like purple fringing, barrel distortion and soft corners are very well controlled.
If you aware of the limitation of this camera as I pointed out in several posts then you will be happy with the Sony HX9V.

  1. It seems that the HX9 is equal to the HX100v in terms of functions and quality. So the difference is in the zoom ring and the 30x vs. the 16x. Dont you agree with me on that - or can you see more differences ?

  2. Claus, do not forget the swivel screen and the ring is fly by wire so same thing as using the rocker on the HX9V.

    Sony homogenized most of their cameras for 2011. Most X cameras have identical features with just very little difference, thin and a bigger touch screen TX100V, largest zoom HX100V, best all rounder HX9V, a bit cheaper and a bit less features HX7V
